Things to do in Portland with a baby

If baby bedding zones are aflame with joy on a warm Portland summer night, you may have a better chance of enjoying the nightlife. But why choose Portland? There are plenty of good reasons to visit the City of Roses, from its parks and rivers, to the Portlandia-inspired artwork around town. Plus, the city is a haven for music festivals and other events that are a blast for parents and kids alike.

For those of you who are able to travel, here are a few tips for those who live in Portland: 1) Go for a walk and visit the zoo: the Zoo is open until 10pm and the entrance fee is only $5.00. 2) Go for a picnic at Tom McCall Waterfront Park: it is right next to Zidell’s Mill, which is the only working water powered mill in North America. 3) Go to the Vista House: it was the last resting place of the famous explorer, Meriwether Lewis. 4) Visit the Rocky Butte Cemetery: the oldest cemetery in Portland. It is also the site of the first meeting of the Oregon Country militia. 5) Go

When you have a baby, there are certain things you need to do. You need to get your baby a stroller, you need to get the baby a car seat, you need to get the baby some clothes, you need to get the baby at least one toy, you need to get the baby some bottles, you need to get the baby some diapers. Sure, you could just buy all of this stuff, but that would be a lot of money. Instead, you have to find a source of free stuff. And we have it! We have the internet!

Monday

  • Rainy Day: Book Babies (11-11:30 a.m.) at Sellwood-Moreland Library, followed by lunch at Grand Central Bakery (kids’ section in the rear) at 7987 SE 13th Street.
  • On a sunny day, visit the Oregon Zoo ($9.50 for adults) and get animal-shaped French fries from the Africafe. Check out the zoo’s music series as well. You are welcome to bring a picnic supper and relax on the grass.

Tuesday

  • Oregon Museum of Science and Industry [OMSI] on a Rainy Day ($9 for adults) — visit the 0-24 month area of the Science Playground upstairs or brave the sandbox.
  • At the Kennedy School, there is a Mommy Matinee ($3 at 1pm).
  • On a sunny day, visit the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, which offers free admission on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Buy $1 worth of broken corn to feed the ducks at the farm stand on 28th Street, just north of the Garden.

Wednesday

  • Yoga Shala Southeast hosts a Moms and Babies Yoga session on a rainy day (10:30-12:00). After that, grab a bite to eat with your new yoga buddies at Urban Grind (22nd and NE Oregon), which has a baby area with swings, exersaucers, and lots of toys.
  • On a bright day, splash around in the fountain in Jamison Square (10th and Johnson) before taking a stroll around the Pearl District. SohBet Caf 2710 N. offers free WiFi and kid-friendly cuisine with toys.

Thursday

  • Mamalates class (10:30-11:45) at The Yoga Space on a rainy day. Wendy also offers a unique pilates class for post-c-section moms! Lunch at 1300 E. Burnside’s Old Wives Tales or coffee and a sweet treat at Crema at 2728 SE Ankeny
  • To a sunny day, visit a farmer’s market or go out on Sauvie Island and pick your own berries.

Friday

  • Freedom Fridays at the Academy Theater on a Rainy Day (78th and Stark Street). The cost of a movie ticket is $3, and daycare is $5 per kid. After the movie, go to BiPartisan Caf at 7901 SE Stark. Gino’s Restaurant and Bar (dinner) (8051 SE 13th) While you wait for your meal, they provide complimentary bread, cheese, and apples to the children.
  • On a sunny day, pay a visit to the International Rose Test Garden ”“ after all, this is the city of roses. If you’ve got your stroller, stop by Saint Cupcake for a cupcake (no highchairs).

Saturday

  • On a rainy day, pay a visit to Zenana Spa and Wellness Center, a new family-friendly spa in Portland (opening at the end of July). Laurelwood Public House and Brewery, 1728 NE 40th, serves dinner and beverages.
  • On a sunny day, go down to the gorge to see the waterfalls and go for a short walk.

Sunday

  • Southwest Community Center’s Family Swim on a Rainy Day (11:30-1:30) A drop-in visit costs $5.75. Peanut Butter and Ellie’s for lunch (across the street)
  • Swim at Sellwood Pool (beach entrance) on a sunny day ”“ Parent/pre-school swim 11:30-12:50
