It’s all your decision! I wouldn’t wait beyond 38 weeks just in case your baby arrives a little early. Going into labor feeling totally unprepared is never a good thing. If you’re pregnant with multiples or have a high-risk pregnancy, consider packing about 35 weeks to be prepared for everything….. It’s well worth it, believe me. Â Have everything ready at the door or in the vehicle after it’s fully packed.
While you’ll almost certainly be preparing for both baby and dad, put yourself first when packing your hospital bag. After all, you’re the one who’s putting in the effort throughout your vacation, so you want to be as relaxed as possible. You will be the happiest and calmest version of yourself if you have all you need and desire.
What to Bring to the Hospital — For Mom
- A warm robe—it doesn’t matter whether it’s new or old, as long as it’s comfortable and you’re ready to give it up.
- Layered, light, and comfortable clothing—I cannot emphasize the importance of comfort enough. Also, since hospital temperatures may fluctuate considerably, it’s a good idea to have some layerable clothes on hand, such as a cardigan. It’s also a good idea to bring a couple of your own nightgowns, as opposed to the hospital ones, since they’ll help you feel more human.
- Going home attire… after all, you and your new baby will be going home together! Remember that you’ll probably still have a bit of a bump, so dress appropriately.
- 2 or 3 pairs of socks- You should be able to wander about the hospital hallways during and after delivery.
- Slippers & Flip Flops- Your feet are going to be swollen. I’m sorry to be the one to break it to you that this probably won’t go away right after labor either, so these will be your best shoe options. Plus, remember those dorm room showers? Well, the hospital showers have the possibility of being just as bad so flip flops are required.
- breastfeeding pads and a maternity bra
- Lanolin or a different kind of Nipple Cream
- 2 or 3 pairs of ruined underwear
- a ponytail holder, a headband, or a scrunchie
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, your favorite lotion, contacts lens case/solution, eyeglasses, hairbrush, and makeup (it’s normal to want to feel confident and beautiful when you’re in the hospital!)
- Charger with cell phone
- Information about your insurance and hospital paperwork
- Photo ID
- I suggest making a birth plan, even if it’s only a basic one! It will assist you in having the experience you want.
- To keep your lips moist, eat sugar-free sweets.
- Snacks—bring all your guilty delights, and ditch your diet goals for the duration of your visit.
- Light reading- I’d recommend magazines since you won’t want to delve into anything too substantial.
- Pillow- Everyone has various tastes in pillows, but I believe most people would agree that hospital pillows aren’t ideal, so bring one you like and put it in a pillowcase that you can identify.
- A towel for the bathroom

What to Bring to the Hospital — For the Baby
- Bring one newborn size and one one to three-month size with you when you return home since you never know what size your baby will be.
- 2 onesies in white
- 1 Hat
- Booties or Socks
- Scratch Mitts (or just wear your socks!)
- Blankets – one for warmth and another for swaddling
- Boppy
- Approved Infant Vehicle Seat- While this may not fit in the bag, you should have it ready to go in the car or near your belongings.
- Winter infants should wear hats, mittens, and a snowsuit that is suitable for the season.
What to Bring to the Hospital — For Dad
- Charger for the camera
- Charger with cell phone
- 2 sets of undergarments and 2 sets of clothing
- Toothbrush, deodorant, contact lens case/solution, and spectacles are examples of travel-size toiletries.
- IPad with pre-loaded shows/movies to watch or light reading
- Headphones
- Folder- Assign him the responsibility of keeping track of any papers you and the baby get from the physicians throughout your stay. You’re far less likely to lose anything if you put everything in a folder.
- Wallet
- Bring him his favorite snacks to keep him away from yours!
