If you’re a new mom, you may be wondering if there are things to do in Seattle with a baby. While adults may be able to go out to lunch or the movies, babies need to be carried around and fed. That means that you’ll probably be spending a lot of your time at home. But don’t despair! Seattle has a lot to offer people with babies, and you don’t have to be a newcomer to enjoy it.
Because parents are a community, and communities consist of a mix of people, we all have some things in common. We share our lives with our babies, and some of us have just had them. We share our lives with our friends, and some of us have just had babies. And we all have the joy of watching our children grow up and become independent adults.
As a new mom, your life changes drastically. The idea of being a parent is overwhelming. From the moment your baby is born you will start thinking about how you can make life better for them. You will start to learn new things about being a parent and new things about yourself. As a new mom, you will make mistakes. You will make a few, and you will make a lot. But you will learn from them and be better for it.
Jacqui is the editor of Red Tricycle, a newsletter and website devoted to discovering fun things for kids in Seattle.
She offers some of her favorite activities for new mothers and infants in the city, which she was inspired by her own son, James Hudson:
The First Day: The City It’s impossible to visit Seattle without seeing the sights. To escape the crowds, visit Pike Place Market and Seattle Center during the week, early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
- Olympic Sculpture Park is the latest & great Seattle attraction (always open). Very easy to navigate with a stroller.
- Unless you go extremely early in the morning, I would recommend using a baby carrier at Pike Place Market.
- If it’s sunny, play in the fountains at Seattle Center. If it’s raining, visit the Pacific Science Center. Check out the Seattle Center’s calendar for a complete list of summer festivities.
Day 2: Madison Valley / Madison Park It has a great neighborhood feel about it. Check out these fun shops.
- Grab some sandwiches from Essential Bakery and have a picnic in the Arboretum or at Madison Park beach. My Coffeehouse is a cool mommy hangout On E Madison between 28th & 29th (it’s just not Seattle without a coffee shop visit).
- At Madison and 41st, The Original Children’s Shop sells high-end children’s clothing, toys, and other items.
- If you have a child, there is a playground across from the Bakery in Madison Park.
- If you get out of the house in time on a Thursday or Sunday, breathe through a mom & baby yoga class at Santosha Yoga (by appointment). Treat yourself to a donut after yoga class at Madison Park Bakery.
Ballard on the third day Boutique stores, local pubs, quirky eateries, and waterfront parks abound in Ballard. But how about Ballard for the little ones?
- Check out the Seattle Locks, the city’s most popular tourist attraction, which has lovely park grounds and is simple to navigate with a stroller.
- Firehouse Coffee – located directly next door to Gymboree and offers a children’s play area.
- Me & moms – huge kids’ consignment store with lots to look at
- Archie McPhee is a fun, outrageous novelty shop.
Columbia City, Day 4
- Columbia City Cinema offers movies for infants and parents on Tuesdays. For current showings, give us a call.
- From May through October, the Farmers Market with Kids Activity Area is open on Wednesdays.
- On Thursdays, Lotus Yoga has a great Mom & Baby yoga class
- Retroactive Kids, Columbia City Bakery, and Tutta Bella Pizzeria, as well as Sweet Peas Consignment Shop, provide art courses.
Day Five: Queen Anne Upper Queen Anne has evolved from a singles marketplace to a kiddie haven. Enjoy wandering through the shops & cafes.
- The first and third Sundays of each month, there will be a story time with Queen Anne Books.
- Urban Kids Play is a hip children’s store that provides everything from yoga to story time in both English and Spanish.
- Lily’s -Â just peek your head into this salon that focuses on updos, manis & pedis for kids
Snoqualmie Falls (Day 6) Snoqualmie Falls, which is even higher than Niagara Falls, is a must-see attraction.
- With a stroller or infant carrier, a walk around the falls is possible.
- There are several interesting businesses in Snoqualmie Ridge, including Zeebis, a fantastic toy store.
- Peanut Butter & Lili sells high-end baby accessories
Seventh Day: Capitol Hill Playtime, swimming, delicious food, and a free entry art museum So much for taking it easy.
- Vios Caf Seattle’s most kid-friendly restaurant; on any given day, the cafe is packed with children ranging in age from baby to toddler. Excellent Mediterranean cuisine is also available.
- In the summer, the Miller Community Center offers a drop-in play time for babies 6 months and up, as well as a wading pool.
- Volunteer Park has lovely grounds to walk around, and the conservatory and Asian Art Museum are also worth seeing (free on first Thursday and first Sunday)
